ye: an underrated masterpiece

( t h r e a d ‼️)
Track 1: I Thought About Killing You

ITAKY perfectly sets the tone for the album. Kanye talks about the lows he experiences during bi-polar disorder, repeating “I Thought about Killing You” over an ominious beat.
As the song continues, there’s a beat switch and Kanye murks it (pun intended) with some braggadocious bars. A perfect intro to the album.
Track 2: Yikes

Yikes is very high energy and the song revolves around the contraversies Kanye went through at the time. Kanye referening ODing on meds, hospital visits, his TMZ incident, and so much more. He talks about how his behavior sometimes even scares himself.
The instrumental on the song might also just be my favorite beat on the whole album.
Track 3: All Mine

This song is usually considered the weakest one on the album. I believe that it’s actually a hidden gem. Kanye is notoriously sex driven and few songs in his catalogue display that as well as All Mine.
I’m not trying to paint it as some grand statement on lust but the playful and humorous bars paired up with the hook, which seems to be hit or miss for most people, works perfectly for me.
Track 4: Wouldn’t Leave

Kanye makes a song dedicated to his wife, Kim. The production is simple yet so beautiful at the same time. The guest singers on the track, primarily PARTYNEXTDOOR make amazing appearences.
The content of the song lies in the fact that despite all the drama Ye is going through, Kim remains loyal and supportive. Wouldn’t Leave is truly telling for how strong Ye and Kim’s bond is. Shame that rumors of divorce pops up every few months just for buzz online.
Track 5: No Mistakes

Bi-polar disorder causes extreme shifts in moods, with high highs and low lows. If the dark and uncut material on the other tracks are the lows Ye experiences, this track must be the highs.
The beat is cheerful and Kanye comes through with braggadocio that is simply infectious. Charlie Wilson expectedly kills the hook.
Track 6: Ghost Town

This song is literal perfection. The beat is steady and gorgeous, the features are perfectly utilized throughout the song, Kanye’s sole verse is one of his best in his discog. The song is about reminiscing, being free-spirited and hoping for brighter days.
Ye delivers his lines with so much raw passion, you feel every word he says. The song closes out with 070 Shake’s outro which can only be described as powerful in every sense of the word. The way the instrumental progresses throughout the outro only enhances this factor.
A beautiful song throughout and one of the best songs Kanye has ever made.
Track 7: Voilent Crimes

Another song where 070 Shake kills it, this time on the hook. The lyrical content is about Kanye’s fears over his daughters and growing up too fast in the hyper-sexual world Kanye is so caught up in.
The beat is downcast and compliments the lyrical themes perfectly. The whole song caps off the album in a beautiful way.
This album has helped me through a lot and I think it’s truly great. It’s kind of disappointing that this album gets overlooked, underrated, and overhated all the time. I’d probably give it a 9/10 and in my opinion, it’s definitely top 5 of 2018.
