Last three days, I have participated in 1) a "traditional" Zoom workshop (12 ppl) 2) a Wickr Pro conference (40+ ppl) and 3) a Telegram channel conference (150+ ppl) and I know that academic conferences need to be radically rethought. 1/3
The low-bandwidth, 'audio' preferred! landscape of 2+3 is amazing. People are on mobile, video is rarely on, and synchronous or asynchronous audio+synchronous chat is robust as a new mode of engagement. 2/3
The Zoom workshop may stick around for resource rich scenarios but the audio-chat formats for wider distribution, and engagement is critical to think about the digital divide. 3/3
