This is a whale wild fact thread bc I’m researching my Original Writing Project™️ & they keep getting infinitely cooler.
1. Sperm whales, at 230 dB, are the loudest animals on earth (jet engine is 180 dB); they communicate from hundreds of miles away. Also they sleep like this.
2. Bowhead whales have complex songs & like to improvise, like jazz! Their songs rival those of songbirds, & they tend to sing all winter long under the Arctic ice. Their melodies change completely from year to year (scientists recorded 184 unique melodies in 1 area over 3 yrs).
3. “Killer whales,” aka orcas (technically dolphins but also toothed whales, all cetaceans) in the Salish Sea have learned how to beach themselves in order to hunt more effectively — they drive seals onto the beach, then let the waves carry them right up to their tasty snack
4. Commercial whaling almost drove humpback whales to extinction. It’s estimated 200k+ humpbacks alone were killed in the 20th century. BUT though there were only 440 western South Atlantic humpbacks left in the 1950s, they now number 25,000 - 93% of their original population :’)
5. In 2016, researchers discovered beluga whales (also called the canaries of the sea bc they’re talkative, which is delightful) make 4 distinct types of bubbles to communicate, which correspond to distinct states of mind (playful bubbles, angry bubbles, concerned bubbles, etc)
6. Narwhal tusks are giant teeth that have 10 million nerve endings & at the tip can bend in about a foot in either direction (it's sorta floppy. please know this.). Males have the big 9 ft tusks, but females can also grow tusks, they just usually drop them or retain lil ones :)
7. Hippos are the closest living relative to cetaceans (whales, dolphins, & porpoises). You are welcome for this blessed knowledge, which led me down the rabbit hole of whale evolution, which is a wild time. These evolution charts look like memes but THEY ARE NOT
8. In 2015 a gray whale named Varvara (Russian equivalent of Barbara, pls note) broke the record for the longest migration of any mammal, traveling from Russia to Mexico then back, 13,988 miles in 172 days. She didn't stop to feed for all 5.5 months WHICH IS METAL AS HELL
9. Right whales (named by whalers bc w their slowness & tendency to float they were the "right whale" to hunt) have weird patches of keratinization called callosities. Nobody seems totally sure why they have this, but each whale has a unique pattern that can be used to ID them :)
10. & last but not least, blue whales are ofc the largest animal on earth BUT they're also the largest animals that HAVE EVER LIVED on earth, including dinosaurs. Also their heartbeats can be heard from 3km away via sonar, from a 400 lb/181 kg heart (human hearts are 10 oz/250 g)
IN CONCLUSION whales are great but in trouble, I encourage u to find ways to help them out via local charities, watershed councils, & ecological reserves, but here are some major ones:

As someone from a landlocked desert that was also an ancient ocean, the ocean both terrifies & fascinates me always & we owe it & all its creatures respect.

If you got whale or general ocean fun facts PLS SHARE, it's nerd hours here always thank you for coming to my Ted Talk ❤️
