Ok so, I've been hesitant to talk about this at all because a lot of people didn't travel during Christmas, and for good reason. And I'm sure I have some friends and mutuals who would be disappointed with my decision to go to Halifax for Christmas. But I did. (1/9)
That said, I'm shocked that a province like BC, with its huge population and many resources, compares to NS. There's a few articles going around about how Atlantic Canada has done well during the pandemic and why ... but here's just one example: (2/9)
I arrived in Halifax airport at the beginning of December. Many passengers had already filled out a health declaration before even getting on the plane, but I hadn't (although I was temperature-checked and screened at Vancouver airport). I went looking for a form. (3/9)
The guy behind the plexiglass told me how it worked and pointed me to the QR code. I had to declare that I had no symptoms, read the rules, check a box that said I read the rules, check another box that acknowledged I'd be fined if I lied, and then gave contact info. (4/9)
Every day for 14 days I got an email prompting me to log back in to the ministry of health website and update whether I had any symptoms, and re-confirming that I understood the rules and that I'd be fined for breaking the rules. (5/9)
I didn't miss any days, but I've been told if I didn't fill out the form for a day or two I'd get a phone call and/or a home visit. At the end of 14 days I got a little congratulations email, and that was that. (6/9)
Coming back to Vancouver 6 weeks later and: nothing. Air Canada made its announcements about washing hands and social distancing, everyone wore masks, and there was a poster or two, but no guy behind plexiglass and no QR code linking to a website. (7/9)
I'm now self-isolating for another 14 days, but who at the ministry of health knows that I'm supposed to? There's literally nothing but nosy neighbors to keep me accountable. Not even a little tickbox on a website that could be thrown together in an afternoon. (8/9)
I can't believe how I felt dealing with that website in Nova Scotia. Yeah, it was a little chore and it got old fast, but it's such an easy little thing. I can't believe every province hasn't been doing something similar the whole time. (9/9)
