Fantastic to be a part of this collaboration between sexual health/HIV & ICU with @vanessa_apea @YizeWan @Zudin_P @rupert_pearse @profchloeorkin & @JohnProwle showing the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on Black & Asian groups in the first peak. https://twitter.com/johnprowle/status/1350854330858041347
A striking finding was that Black and Asian people admitted to @NHSBartsHealth hospitals with COVID-19 were much younger than White people (median age - Black 64yrs, Asian 59yrs, White 73yrs).
We concluded that patients from Asian and Black backgrounds had higher mortality from COVID-19 infection despite controlling for all previously identified confounders and frailty. Higher rates of invasive ventilation indicate greater acute disease severity.
Our analyses suggest that patients of Asian and black backgrounds suffered disproportionate rates of premature death from COVID-19.
Failure to robustly respond to the ethnic disparities so conspicuously unmasked during the COVID-19 pandemic can only further entrench and inflict them on future generations.
