Christian Insurrection
Some here are offended by the characterization of this prayer, and the insurrection more broadly, as “Christian.” On one level, I’m sympathetic to this response. I, too, believe that this is a diabolical misrepresentation of orthodox Christian faith.
But I also believe the same is true of other syncretistic expressions of biblical faith. Like chattel slavery. Like the Klan and mobs who terrorized/lynched African Americans in the name of Jesus, employing liturgical forms, scriptures, and vocabulary of Christian faith/worship.
While these are distortions, they have a complex and shameful yet undeniable kinship with American Christianity that must be acknowledged and examined. This is not our God, but this is who we are. Indeed, for generations, the stranger has been given shelter in our home.
And we will fail to purge from the church what we do not first own.
