The best time to have a referendum would be the late 2020s. A referendum in 2 or 3 years time would be lost heavily, & similar to the SNP's mistake of holding a referendum too early (an appalling error!), independence would be locked out for a generation. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-politics-55682595
A referendum in the late 2020s would need a large increase in Plaid Senedd Members in May, so that a majority might be realistic in 2026. Plaid is not going to win a majority in 2021 - we have to be realistic about this and plan accordingly.
And you only fight a referendum when you believe there is a settled will. That is not the case now. Support for independence is soft. The country is indy-curious not indy-certain. You hold a referendum when you get to the latter position.
You need to have a plan for immediate consequences too. What would happen to social security, pensions, the NHS? Would there be a flight of capital? What happens to house prices? Cross-border arrangements? Will there be dual citizenship?
There needs to be broad consensus on these before holding a referendum or the independence campaign will be obliterated in a plebiscite. It could easily be worse than 1979 if held too early on the hoof. Everything says hold off for now, & let public opinion mature first.
