After much deliberation concerning the events of last week concerning homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia in our Catholic schools, TorontoâSt. Paulâs New Democrats have decided to act.
Members of the @TCDSB and other publicly-funded Catholic institutions and boards have repeatedly attacked members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. The 2SLGBTQIA+ community is an at-risk community; the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected many at-risk 2SLGBTQIA+ youth.
Many Catholic publicly-funded school boards neglect or intentionally omit 2SLGBTQIA+ resources, which may affect the availability of life-saving information and/or resources.
However, we recognize with sadness that there is a culture of homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia in the @TCDSB and in publicly-funded Catholic education based on recent events.
We welcome the 14 January 2021 action wherein the @TCDSB passed a motion to establish 2SLGBTQIA+ resources and to create an advisory committee to deal with issues thereof.
We demand from the @TCDSB that the aforementioned 2SLGBTQIA+ âadvisory committeeâ be a respectful and progressive space.
We demand that individuals or organizations with a recorded homophobic, biphobic, and/or transphobic agenda like Michael Del Grande and the @archtoronto be excluded and barred from being on this committee funded with taxpayer dollars.
We invite other riding associations to join in demanding that @fordnation and the Government of Ontario denounce all forms of everyday and systemic transphobia and homophobia and create a transparent and fully-resourced Provincial Strategy to support 2SLGBTQIA+ Ontarians.
We, the members of the Electoral District Association of the @NDP and of the @OntarioNDP in TorontoâSt. Paulâs, condemn the aforementioned attacks on 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, recognize their inherent right to existence and value.
Our riding association will be sharing our deep concern with @TCDSB and will lead in the push to purge bigotry from our public schools, whether secular or Catholic.
