Supplements Thread
I get asked often how I feel about supplements, and I tend to disappoint the gym bro‘s who ask
So here’s the supplements I view as not worthless

To start, it’s gotta be said that supplements should be the last thing you look at in your fitness lifestyle.
They’re only here to help you get a little extra of some particular nutrient, etc. That’s why they’re “supplements.”

There’s no point in spending $100-200+ a month on these if you aren’t doing the basics first
- Training well
- Eating real food, especially high protein foods
- Getting good sleep
However, there are a few understandable supps you can use if you’re checking those boxes

Protein intake is vital in all aspects of fitness, be it strength, hypertrophy, performance
If you have a daily protein goal to reach then protein powder can be a convenient and inexpensive way to get there
Do some research before buying
Some protein brands are higher quality and more trustworthy than others
Some proteins may have a lower protein/serving than it seems or could otherwise have had issues with additives or nitrogen spiking
Oh, and don’t get mass gainers

I don’t think creatine is really anything special, but there’s a lot of evidence that it is beneficial to performance training
(Keep in mind a lot of supplement companies back some of these studies though

Creatine is inexpensive, shown promising results, and no - it isn’t going to destroy your kidneys (myth)
It can be hard to obtain from food, which is why it’s on my list. Otherwise I’d say to just eat food
I don’t use creatine, but I don’t blame people for using it either

Straight up, it can just be hard to get all the vitamins and minerals your body needs, even if your diet is healthy
Your diet might do 90-95% of the job if you’re on it, but if this helps cover that last bit then cool
Just don’t buy sugary gummy ones
Part B of this - I also understand getting particular vitamins you may be low in
I’m not a vitamin expert, but I know Vit D (especially in winter), and other vitamins can be helpful

I don’t use pre-workout. I usually advise against pre-workout
But I drink Bangs, so I really don’t have room to talk here
I understand having days where you just want an extra kick to get you moving
Here’s the flip side of that - don’t become reliant on these drinks
If you need 800mgs of caffeine every day just to get thru your workout, then you don’t have a solution
You have a problem
Dependency on these drinks is very real. Avoid putting yourself in that position

To cap this off, here’s a list of supplements I think are stupid
Sorry gym bros
- mass gainers
- BCAAs
- anything that has a name you can’t pronounce at first glance
- any stimulant powder that makes your heart hurt
- anything a famous person says to buy

My main view on supplements:
They aren’t worth shit if you aren’t doing everything else right first
And if you do everything else right, you probably don’t need them anyways
