One of my companion friends told me that she’s received over 200 emails of “well wishes” from clients. No gift card or tip attached. Many of them tried to have back and forth conversations for free. It was an admin nightmare for her, adding stress to an already stressful time.
She had clients ask her how she was doing. She replied, “Honestly? I’m struggling.” Then silence on their end. She told me she made a list of former regulars who tried to get her emotional labour for free during the pandemic so that she can refuse them service when this is over.
She said, “I know it doesn’t make sense financially, but I just can’t imagine allowing someone back into my life, to touch my body again, after they treated me like that. I just can’t do it. The thought makes me nauseous.”
It made me think about how many clients think things will be the same with us when the pandemic is over. They won’t. We will remember how you treated us.
