(1) Actually, "The Searchers" is one of the greatest films about racism.

John Wayne (who was racist) plays a Confederate white supremacist who obsessively searches for kidnapped Natalie Wood for 5 yrs - not bc he cares about her, but for his deranged ideal of white purity... https://twitter.com/StefanMassong/status/1350612424261578762
(2) The scene where Ethan visits the 'rescued women asylum' is the best & darkest acting of Wayne's career.

When he finally finds NW & she's become part of the tribe, he wants to kill her.

In the end he doesn't - he brings her home, but understands he has no place in society.
(3) When you look at the casual racism towards Indians in Ford's "My Darling Clementine" the evolution is amazing.

The film is dated & problematic in other ways but there are few westerns of the era remotely like it.
