I’m going to say this again and again: Black women need to be more discrete about their life, especially if they are living well. There is a Black woman who made a wonderful life for herself in Bali, and now there is a chance that’s all going to get taken away. https://twitter.com/independent/status/1350787741102055424
She ended up exposing that she’s staying in Bali on an expired tourism visa during a pandemic. She also doesn’t pay taxes. The media is picking up on the story after her thread went viral. The government will likely investigate due to negative attention and public backlash.
She could have easily avoided all this by keeping it cute and writing a regular travel book about Bali and her appreciation for the culture. Instead, she exposed her tea and confessed to breaking the law. She also compromised the people who helped her.
Best case scenario: the story dies down quickly, and she can go back to living her life in paradise. Worst case? She gets fined and deported.
The fine for overstaying a visa in Indonesia is 1 million RP per day, equal to 71 USD. She’s overstayed her visit for approximately 18 months, which is 547 days. That’s $38,837 in potential fines.
She also outed herself as queer in a country in that’s very hostile towards LGBTQ people. They might have overlooked it due to her being an American tourist but who knows what will happen now that so many people are paying negative attention to her.
Avoid placing a target on your back. People are bored, angry, desperate, and want an excuse to lash out. Stop opening your life up to public scrutiny. Once it’s out there, you have limited control over the narrative.
Celebrate your milestones and successes with people who genuinely care about you. If you want to inspire people (do you really, or is it the desire to prove your worth or get content), tell them to get a self-help book or mentor some kids.
The hustle culture is making most of you sloppy. If you are a subject matter expert in a particular area, great share that and earn money but do people need to know your life's details? No. It’s not worth it.
