The EU and the UK have imposed sanctions over Navalny's poisoning on six senior Russian officials and a state chemical centre. But don’t count on such sanctions being levied on US officials who instigated the January 6 Capitol riot. https://twitter.com/lovedaym/status/1350808021799116800
US officials who promote conspiracy theories that result in harm or deaths of their political opponents know that EU and UK will never impose sanctions on US or move to hold such officials accountable, like they held Russian officials accountable for Magnitsky’s death. https://twitter.com/khanoisseur/status/1350843834461265923
One reason EU and UK don’t levy sanctions on US officials who instigate riots (or fail to punish cops who commit extrajudicial killings) — they believe US laws would hold such individuals accountable. That assumption is being put to the test again, with latest impeachment push. https://twitter.com/khanoisseur/status/1350845234419273728
So even if Trump is not convicted or ultimately held responsible, it’s good theater to show the world that a process exists to hold top officials accountable, even if the full punishment is not carried out... https://twitter.com/khanoisseur/status/1350846080884367362
Of course, if a CEO of any major company in US had spread conspiracy theories and riled up employees to march to the Capitol, and if those employees were caught causing destruction of property, that CEO would’ve been out of a job today. https://twitter.com/khanoisseur/status/1350847684266119168
If Trump is convicted of instigating the riot, both Republican and Democratic officials would have to choose their words carefully when addressing their audiences otherwise they too could be held liable if their supporters cause rioting that leads to deaths or “insurrections”
This raises the question: when is violent protest acceptable? How do we identify those who participated in a violent protest and hold them responsible? Do we use more electronic surveillance, facial recognition and AI like in China to track people’s movements and their speech? https://twitter.com/khanoisseur/status/1350852507812163595
Trump’s conviction could impact social media platform policies — to help identify those behind violence, Twitter could ban anonymous profiles, requiring you to submit a valid ID before you can create an account. More facial recognition tech will creep into the public square. https://twitter.com/khanoisseur/status/1350853255740485632
