One question I get asked a lot is “how do I grow my Twitter following?”
The honest answer is, I don’t know
but here's a thread of tips that I think might help
The honest answer is, I don’t know

1. Be consistent
It’s hard to think of original content everyday but posting something small increases your opportunity to chat with others in the community.
It doesn't have to be content it could as simple as "I learnt how to create a circle in CSS today"

2. Follow accounts in the community you’re trying to be part of
Filling your feed with relevant content is the first step to engaging. Follow people in your field of interest (try searching hashtags to find them) and start interacting with their posts.

3. Interact with people
I suggest dedicating a set amount of time per day to interact with other peoples posts.
I started off wishing Happy Birthday, Good Luck & Congrats to get into the flow of tweeting strangers, it then came more naturally when reacting to tech content.

4. Be yourself
Be unique. Don't copy.
Don’t just post content that you think will get you followers, show humanity & vulnerability.
People want to know the real person behind your account so show your personality & let others get to know you!

5. Don’t be afraid to post
The only way you’ll connect with people is by posting so definitely don’t be put off straight away.
The first few times it might feel like you’re tweeting into a void but keep going and you will see it slowly start to pick up.

6. Be mindful what you are posting
Questioning whether to Tweet something? That's a good indicator that it might not be a good idea.
Make sure you're being a positive voice in the community and not inciting unkind or controversial conversations.

7. Keep your audience/message clear
Do you want to tweet about tech or about motorbikes?
Finding a subject/niche and sticking to it is a great way to build an audience. Don't get me wrong people want to see the whole person but a mix is hard for your audience to relate to.

8. Don’t beg for followers
Asking people to follow you or telling people your main objective is to gain as many followers as possible isn’t going to go down well. Share great content consistently, build friendships and the followers will come naturally.

9. Be kind
I really hope I don’t need to spell this one out for you but please, be kind and respectful to others and I can almost guarantee you will get the same response.
Also, if you have the capability, offer to help other people wherever possible.

10. Don’t mansplain
This particularly applies to males replying to females, but I think we can all be guilty of it - don’t launch into an explanation or massive thread of advice if the person posting didn’t ask for it.

11. Know you have something useful to share
When we’re new to something we often think we don’t have anything useful to share. The way you say it might resonate with someone better and you might improve your knowledge by trying to explain the subject matter to someone else.

12. Don’t be afraid to ask for help
The tech community on Twitter is the most kind & helpful community ever. People seem to remember we were all new once. Asking for help builds relationships & allows us to celebrate when you manage to get the thing you’ve been struggling with.

13. Use hashtags sparingly
This isn't Insta, a whole load of hashtags can make your tweets look a bit spammy and they aren't really necessary.
Also make sure you're using them as intended don't just shove the 100DaysofCode hashtag on everything to get likes.

14. Don't be afraid to brag
Self love is the best kind of love, don't be afraid to say "I smashed this". People love celebrating with you and you'll never know how many people you might inspire

15. Don’t be a d*ck
This one is quite self-explanatory but if I need to emphasize, don’t be unkind to people, don’t troll and try to be understanding of other points of view.
If you don’t agree with something, unless it’s factually incorrect I would suggest scrolling past!
