The actions against these victims did not start with slaughter. Most people would not accept this. It began with lumping people into groups and taking away their rights, or freedoms based on their group membership.

We would like to believe that the SS and the German army did all the dirty work

The power of propaganda is that it uses your best qualities against you, as does all abusive thinking.
Your sense of justice and your compassion for your fellow man are targeted, as is your sense that you see others who have been deceived and you want them to see the truth

Pay attention when you have sweeping powerful beliefs about large percentages of our population (The Left, The Right, The Ones who voted for _______) that also result in outrage and fear. This is what it feels like to be fooled by propaganda
