UK MP is worried that young people are focusing too much on the terrible crimes in Britain's past instead of the good. This is silly for many reasons. Millennials are not the first to critique British history. Try reading historians from Ireland or India in the past century.
Secondly, countries are not good or bad. Germany made some big contributions in history. The Nazi period doesn't define it, but it also can't be ignored. Britain did lead the fight against slavery. But it also led the slave trade.
Britain made some important contributions to democratization and it killed peaceful democratic protesters at Peterloo. History is not a binary between good and bad. Understanding the complexity of the past helps make thoughtful citizens. Simplifying it in any direction does not.
