It's just such an uninformed take, as well as being mean & small. Vergil's Aeneid? Homerian fanfiction. Dante's Divine Comedy? Vergilian fanfiction. Shakespeare's Two Noble Kinsmen? Chaucerian fanfiction. Milton's Paradise Lost? Biblical fanfiction.
Tl, dnr: the "literary canon" of "Great Books" so many people want to continue to lionize and claim as capital-L "Literature" is comprised of white men writing fanfiction, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
(For the record, I do like those "Great Books" for the most part. I simply don't ascribe to the idea that they're somehow inherently better or more important than other literary texts and forms by other kinds of writers.)
