Even before I became a sabb, . @ExeterGuild played such an important role in my life. The societies that I joined really enriched my student life and made me the rounded person I am today. #LoveSUs
It was . @psysocexeter who organised sessions to teach me how to write a lab report in first year. It was . @UoE_LGBTQ where I learned to embrace my queer identity. It was . @exevegsoc who supported me when I first went vegan. It was . @ExeterFemSoc who gave my poetry a platform.
People often trivialise clubs and societies but they played such an important part in helping me feel like I belong, and no doubt these societies are doing the same to current students. The community building work done by clubs and societies are so important right now. #LoveSUs
And in case it’s not clear enough, none of these society activities would happen without support from . @ExeterGuild and especially leadership from . @ExeActivities. #LoveSUs
It was also through . @ExeterGuild that I learned about advocacy and activism. I became a course rep and college officer and these Guild roles enabled me to advocate on behalf of the students I represented and make change. #LoveSUs
Not to mention the Advice Service who gave me support when I was in a crisis, and who made sure I had mental health support during that period. #LoveSUs
My SU wasn’t perfect, which is why I ran for office to make it even better. I’m grateful for the opportunity to work for an organisation that played such a big role in my character building years, and I’m proud of the work my colleagues and I have been doing as officers. #LoveSUs
Final message: Please support your local SUs - they’re doing fantastic work during this pandemic to support students. And tell your SU how much you value them. #LoveSUs
