Argument presented was: "But the students want to work in my lab, & think of the opportunity you are denying them???"
What about all the other students who cannot afford to work for you for free.
What about the extra labour you are benefiting from, where you are not paying them.

Pay undergraduate RAs, and pay them properly (preferably a living wage for your area) - or don't hire them.
And while we have colleagues willing to exploit UG researchers, don't rely on students having undergraduate research on their CV in order to be considered for a PhD.
