Mighty Storm Jormungandr #SMITE #Splashart

This was my first assignment for SMITE back in 2019. I've always wanted to share
the thinking process and my struggles for this painting and never had
the time to actually do it. But it's #AppreciateADragonDay , so why not

A THREAD-->
[BRIEF] a Chinese skin for Jormungandr. I also received a concept sketch (Artist: John Bridges) which shows that the body is thinner than the base model, looking a lot more like chinese dragons. I really dig the design and it made me nervous but excited at the same time!
[THUMBNAILS] a lot of ideas rushed into my head when I saw the brief.
So, I decided to pour it all into my sketchbook but I couldnt decide which ones look the best :D
I tried to show off his long ass figure in all of my sketches.
[SKETCHES] These are the sketches that I like the most.
I went with a couple of different moods:
intimidating, mysterious, and most of all, I tried to show that
this god could bring calamity wherever he went.
I decided to send them-
[ROUGH COLOR] The one they chose is this.
I'm happy with their choice because in this one I can play a lot with his dark ink efx. Again, because this was my very first splash assignment, I was very nervous and couldnt decide which color looks the best so I went with 4 options.
[ROUGH COLOR] After consulting with my co-workers and seniors, I went with this one. I know that I want dark values on his figure so I could convey mysteriousness, so lighter value behind him makes a better
contrast.
[TIGHT SKETCH] before going in to the rendering process,
I want to make a tight sketch first because splash art size is so big and kinda overwhelming, so i wanted to make sure i know what I was doing.
I did the tight sketch but I feel the foreshortening wasnt right-
[REF] So, I decided to step back and look for reference. I remember being very inspired by Greg Rutkowski's Ryusei The Falling Star for MTG because the way the dragon twist its body to the camera is very similar with what I was looking for.
I also gathered photos of snakes with iridescent scale for the render phase. Oh, and I made a simple 3d with 3ds max to help me with the structure and lighting.
[RENDERING] From there rendering was quite straightforward, because I had already gathered so much refs. Dark values on Jormungandr overall body, and red glow on its eyes and mouths to make a lot of little values intersection on his face, and bright value behind him.
[EFX] decided to paint the efx on the last phase, bcs I like it the most! I referenced Bo Chen's Sena Base Splash's efx because it is the exact effect treatment that I had in mind! Dark inky efx which assimilates with the body on its end and diminished into air on the other end
Also, Livia Prima's Avernus Blessings and Kieran Yanner's Cabal Ritualist and Whisper, Blood Liturgist for more efx volume rendering refs! because Efx cant be flat :)
[FINAL] anddd heres the final image with details! Thankyou for reading :) This whole art breakdown thread format is heavily inspired from @rhineville 's MTG art thread.
Hope it helps and I might do more of these in the future! 😉
