A bit of #SWW history on the Sunday stroll. #BomberCommand, #Dambusters, #GuineaPigClub and at least two #VictoriaCross feature.
This looks a normal footpath, but as you can see, the space in the trees is enough for a full road. /1

Until about 20 years ago it was the main road into the hospital at Rauceby Hospital, formerly the Kesteven Asylum. During the SWW the site was taken over by the RAF, including Orchard House (top of this photo), being used by Sir Archibald McIndoe for burns treatment. /2
Amongst those treated here was Sgt John Hannah, who was 18 when his action for which he was awarded the VC, took place in September 1940. Fighting a fire with his bare hand in his HP Hampden was an exceptional act. /3
Another famous VC winner was also treated at Rauceby. Wg Cdr Guy Gibson was reportedly a frequent visitor in the winter of 1942./4
Although McIndoe was a frequent visitor, the burns unit was run by Fenton Braithwaite. After the war he moved to East Grinstead to work with McIndoe, moved to RVI @NewcastleHosps and in later life became President of @BAPRASvoice and Life President of @NUFC /5

Sadly the hospital eventually closed, and like many sites was redeveloped for housing. Orchard House (“no historical significance”) was demolished a couple of years ago, and is currently awaiting more builders to move in. /6
