Much has been written about this, yet there is tremendous value in how @JoannaStern boils this down to its thought-provoking essence:

Only thing I'd add to this excellent piece is we could also accept social media is a powerful intoxicant and categorize it as such.
Like alcohol or junk food, it should be a fraction of our intake.
I think we have forgotten what should be the base of our social and media diet.

On the social side, every time we pick up a screen, the *first* question we should ask ourselves is "Why am I doing this?"
Are we bored? Lonely? Just want an excuse to take a seat?
And the second question is: Well, is being on a screen what I really want to be doing?

On the media consumption side, cultivating the habit of reading *anything but social media* to find out what's going on in the world goes a long way toward becoming a more informed and calmer person.
