that thread the Black woman made about Bali was very harmful during a pandemic and as a westerner. that’s valid. but the fact that y’all are engaging in anti-Blackness and gaslighting Black people about “playing the race card” ain’t it. you can critique without being anti-Black.
there is undeniable privilege in coming from a rich western country and traveling to an impoverished country that relies on tourism to stimulate the economy. but its disheartening that some of y’all are using your valid frustration to justify the anti-Blackness against her.
but for y’all to say it has nothing to do with the fact that she’s Black, that’s a lie. because a lot of y’all are saying things like “I don’t care if she’s green, purple, etc.” or “you’re pulling the race card” as if that’s not something blatantly racist people say all the time.
there’s not a single place/community in the WORLD that Black people can go to where their Blackness doesn’t matter. so to say Black people are “pulling the race card” as if we don’t know anti-Blackness when we see it (esp from a racial community who has historically and 1/
systemically been anti-Black and actively contributed to Black oppression) is not only blatant gaslighting, but is anti-Blackness in itself. it doesn’t matter that “we’re both POC” because POC and Black have never been interchangeable and POC/Black solidarity is a myth. 2/
using a harmful thing that one Black person does as an excuse to be anti-Black thinking it will be justified is NEVER okay. your frustrations and critiques may be valid, but your anti-Blackness is not. your anti-Blackness doesn’t just her her, it hurts ALL Black people.
it’s okay if the thread didn’t sit right with you (cause it didn’t sit right with me either), especially if you’re a part of the community directly affected by tourism in Bali. but leave the anti-Blackness out of your critiques because that blatant violence will never be okay.
