LRT: My first interactions ONLINE with fan fic were actually pre-fanfic dot net with fic on Geocities sites that collected it via submission for specific fandoms. But even before that I was typing up, printing and mailing fan fic to pen pals and getting theirs in return...
It was a good day when I could check the mailbox after coming home from school to find a manilla envelope containing a new chapter of fan fic from one of my pen pals along with a letter that told me what they thought of the last chapter I had sent them.
One of my pen pals was also a good artist and we would draw ballpoint pen illustrations on the outside of the envelopes we sent each other that depicted characters and scenes from our fics.
These are great memories for me and I'm glad I have them. Anyone who shames people for writing, reading and loving fan fic is just being an asshole tbh.
