Man US tipping culture feels so weird to me https://twitter.com/jzux/status/1350538016847065088
Like ppl tip here and will tip generously if the service is good

But if ppl felt entitled to it, no one here would do it bc ppl view it as the employer's responsibility to pay you well

Especially if you're demanding a certain amount

But I get that in the states...
...ppl aren't paid well hence why people feel the absolute need for tips bc it makes all the difference
I think if you demanded someone here to pay you a tip worth a certain amount, it would be viewed as incredibly impolite

And I mean incredibly
Like when most ppl go out they plan to spend a certain amount or they don't wanna go over a certain limit

So it can come across as weird if you're demanding like £10 extra from people who don't see that as throwaway money but an additional cost
Normally if a group of friends is paying and everyone contributes a bit for a tip, it'll add up to a significant amount maybe close to £20 or more

BUT if it's like a family going out

Maybe only one parent might have disposable income there so you can't expect the same amount
Most people here are willing to support local businesses and stuff, kids trying to earn a bit of money, nice staff etc.

But the moment you specifically request/demand money, they'll lose respect for you bc you're not in a position to tell someone else what to do with their money
Especially when the common man is living under the boot of austerity so going out can be seen as a luxury
I often see ppl from the states say stuff like "well if they can't afford to go out and tip loads, they shouldn't be coming here in the first place!"
Customers could probably say the same back to you like "if you can't afford to make a living from this job, maybe you shouldn't be working here in the first place!"
Both statements are equally cruel and show that you're wasting your energy on each other when you should be trying to improve workers rights and decrease austerity

So the government is to blame really
Many people save up for experiences at restaurants etc., budget carefully to accommodate for it or treat it as a one off treat

so idk, to me it comes across as really impolite and inconsiderate to demand money from people who are probably in a similar situation to you
