One year ago today, my partner and I collected the keys to our home. We didn't really expect to have as much time inside as we did, but I thought I'd recap my #WildlifeGardenJourney.
When we moved in we had an ugly blue shed, partly painted fence, and a soggy lawn.
When we moved in we had an ugly blue shed, partly painted fence, and a soggy lawn.
The first step was to add a bird feeder, some planters and because I love my amphibians, a little temporary pond to the right of the shed was essential.
Next up: changed the colour of the fence which has no wildlife benefit but improved the aesthetic tenfold. Also added our mini pond to the left of the shed path.
Bit of planting and landscaping around the small pond in the new borders and the larger pond dug in now. Temporary pond now removed from the back fence.
Extended out the borders and a little more planting. Around this time I'd also planted wildflower seeds and plugs around the bigger pond and was feeding our regular hedgehog visitor. Garden starting to take shape.
Summer and the border was looking fine. Lots of flowers were attracting plenty of pollinators to the garden and we even had large red damselflies egg-laying in the new ponds.
The arrival of the new shed and the destruction of the old shed was very welcome during late summer. Unfortunately the old paintwork was showing through the fence by this time too.
Next up, the little birch tree was transplanted from the middle pot to the top of the right hand border.
Little autumnal leap forward and I've re-painted the fence, dug in the back border and planted my native species hedgerow as well as planting over 100 spring-flowering bulbs. We also received a new outdoor dining set as a gift from my partners parents.
