"What do I do if my kid only wants to read graphic novels?"
This is such an easy answer: get them some more graphic novels. PLEASE parents, do not worry! It's like asking, "What do I do if I can eat all the chocolate I want and be healthy?" This is not a problem!
They are reading! They are increasing both their verbal and visual literacy skills! They are gaining empathy! They are learning! They are becoming CONFIDENT readers! It's so beautiful! Relish this gorgeousness.
"But what if they read thru their graphic novels too fast?"
Good news: they will re-read the ones they have A LOT and re-reading is JUST as good for them as first reading. Also, I bet your local library has a fine collection. Make friends with your children's librarian!
Did you know that teens who read comics also read more prose novels than their non-comics reading peers? Readers are readers. Do not fret that graphic novels will "spoil" kids for other books. Just bask in the beauty. It's all good news.
