I paid for my ug to take the GRE. He was living out of his car.
My PI found out. She reimbursed me. She promised him full part time wage every week as long as he did *something.* She paid for his grad school apps. He’s a world-class PhD student now.
It’s not hard to be decent.

He ALWAYS joined me for evening office sessions. I split my food with him every time. It wasn’t much, but it was always worth it.
I passed along every department event that might have food. He was often the only ug there. He was a sponge. He’ll be co-author on 3 pubs from ug.

Maybe he didn’t always have time with a full engineering course load to work “20 hours a week.” But he always saved me 20 hours of work a week figuring things out on my own. That’s how she saw it. It was probably more tbh. He’s the second person I’ll be thanking for this PhD.
She offered him a chance to work with us for grad school if he wasn’t admitted elsewhere. We both knew that wouldn’t be a problem. He was a genius. He just needed some support, a safety net, and guidance. And someone to vouch that GPA isn’t everything.
There are many budding academics groomed like racehorses for research, but they aren’t the only ones that deserve fair-wage opportunities. We should all be paid more. We should all be valued for our work. We should all be given the tools to succeed. We will *all* be better for it
ALSO:
She helped him land an internship at Intel that he likely otherwise wouldn't have qualified for bc of his GPA. He wanted to do research at UCSB, and she said "You need to go. They'll pay you twice what I'm paying you and your desk will still be here when you get back."
