On any given week there are priests and pastors “faking it”. I don’t mean that judgementally, but sympathetically. They lead worship of a God they haven’t been able to sense; preach a Word they believe but can’t feel; encourage others faith with hearts that are heavy and numb
This isn’t hypocrisy. It’s dedication -a form of love They know their flocks need a shepherd; they know their people need Good News; they know others need prayer and praise - and they provide it, going to an empty cupboard, somehow making a meal of the scraps they find
And this is faith - faith the God they can’t see is still there and sees them; faith that somehow God will use whatever meagre gift they’re able to offer that day; faith their congregations will accept what is offered and forgive them for not being “their best” every week.
And every one of those clergy knows they’re “faking it” some weeks, and they feel unworthy and think maybe they should pack it in, but something - someone - keeps calling them to plod ahead another week. So they write their sermons and organize their services and show up anyway
And because they do - because they offer the tiny fish and few crumbs they’ve managed to scrape together, by the grace of the God they are doing their best
to serve, multitudes are still fed.

Colleagues,if this has been, or is you, I want you to know I see you. I thank you
And more importantly, God sees you and honours you for your dedication.

These are hard days and wells are running dry. Abide in the vine. You will bloom again.
