My thoughts on Werner and his future (thread):

I know I criticise Werner a lot and etc. Rightly so but I do see things getting much better. I’ve always been consistent that in a 433 his best position is by far LW. 442 or a 2 striker formation that is of course a LF.

Werner is a inside forward that works in the half spaces. Let’s get that straight. He’s a great counter presser and he can bag goals for fun when playing the right system. The first problem was this fanbase not watching him and being surprised he has no technical ability.

This was very obvious since day dot. His mentality isn’t the best as well. He’s known to bottle it in big occasions. It’s just something he has in him. I’ve said in the past he is a bottler. He can improve it. We’ll see though.

With Werner at LW he was still getting chances. The only problem was that he was missing a tone of chances. Shown in his xG. The problem was never the position but the fanbase made it out to be a Lampard problem when it was a Werner one.

He kept missing and missing and people never blamed him. This can happen of course. You can either solve it by waiting for one to go in or bench him for a while and build up his hunger and confidence. Lampard kept playing him due to board pressure and his fee being high.

Now this leaves Werner EXTREMELY low on confidence.
I think the solution from now is to bench him and play the players on merit which are mostly the academy players. Werner needs to sit out and gain that hunger he had. He has been extremely underwhelming.

What is his future looking like? I think Werner has a future here but as a extremely good rotational player. He’s not our best lone 9 and even as a second striker I don’t know if he plays a lot due to how most PL teams set up. He needs space and he needs a target man.

He should never play lone striker imo as he just doesn’t suit it. It was obvious. He can’t play with his back to goal. Werner can be our backup LW and he can be that goal threat on the bench or when we play with a 442 I think he should play second striker.

There are currently 2 LW better than him and 2 striker better than him. Being backup to them is fine. He’ll come good Werner. I hope so but these are the thoughts I gathered in the first 6 months.
