Cats are the smartest of them all. They trained humans to provide them with food and shelter, and spend the whole day seeking pleasure and thrill.
I looked deep into Roller’s eyes last night and I could feel that he understood me as a person. He’s a very skeptical cat and over the months we have lived together, we have built a lot of trust between us.
For him to see me, I had to see him. As I picked up on his preferences, he understood that I understood him, and that’s how we built trust. I’d back off on something I can tell he doesn’t like, and he learned that I notice and respect how he’s feeling, so he relaxes around me.
And when I’m sad, I can tell that he senses it! He’ll be more attentive to me instead of waiting for me to come to him, like he can tell I need emotional support.
I think we generally know that cats are so smart, and sometimes we measure it by training them to do tricks and stuff, but it’s this emotional, relational intelligence that gets to me. I’ve never had a cat of my own so it’s new for me to experience this deeper connection.
