Peshawar always reverberates a chord, a city so ancient that it’s almost a dream. Ironically, it’s the city where I grew up. So today I decided to untangle this beauty by a guided tour with Peshawar’s own @iftikharfirdous accompanied by @JBaghwan - Thread
#Peshawar #tourism
The city opens with the simmering Asmai Gate throughly the intricately carved Ander Shaher leading to Dhakki Naal Bandi and the Kapoor Haveli - home to Bollywood’s famous Kapoor Family
And although the government is trying to maintain the Kapoor Haveli, it’s decrepit state tells a different story. The structure is almost collapsing. This will require quite some work.
As we move forward into busy Qissa Khwani Bazar, the city’s business hub, everyday business overshadows the past. And one needs to drown oneself into Taj Soda established in 1936.
Following the serpantine routes of Shah Wali Qatal, we find ourselves in the middle of lots of tea pots, indigenous Vaseline & at the door step of Bollywood legend Shahrukh Khan’s home.
The narrow lanes lead to the wider hustle and bustle of the People Mandi Peshawar, one of the main trade hubs of the city where tales of how the pandemic has lead to an economic disaster are ripened
Bollywood legend Dilip Kumar’s (Yousuf Khan) house and his school in Muhalla Khudadad are not so visible & one has to know the routes very well to finally reach them but the street art is forever in his name
The evening begins to set in as the sunlight fades and we move towards the Gor Gatri Tehsil, the Cunningham Clock tower is reminder of fading time, nostalgic as the prayer call heralds the end of the day
Within the Gor Gatri, a city comes to life. The magnanimity of Peshawar city & its multi ethnic and religious freedom in full glow. One cannot seem to not ask, how did a city so grand come to where we are right now in time.
While the security at the Tehsil whistles the closing off the main gate, we decide to end the trail for now with a cup of green tea. While planning more city excursions in the near future.
