's vision to meet the Fierce Urgency of Now.

Proud to co-sponsor The Fierce Urgency of Now: Guaranteed Income and Dr. King’s Vision with @ColorofChange, @CommunityChangeAct, @TheKingCenter, Office of Councilmember @AmirforATL, and the O4W Economic Security Task Force.
Rev. John Vaughn reminds us that #MLK
called for a #guaranteedincome: the solution to poverty is to abolish it directly by the #guaranteedincome. To move from ideas to action the O4W Econ Sec Task Force is calling for a guaranteed income demonstration.

. @rashadrobinson of @ColorofChange reminds us of the ongoing work of Ebenezer building on its legacy of social justice and bringing that work into the current age. Ebenezer was #MLK
’s spiritual home and where we come together today to uplift his call for a #guaranteedincome.

. @rashadrobinson reminds us that racial justice, recognizing systemic racism and fighting to undo it, is necessary to get to economic equality. Racial justice will not just be an outcome of achieving a #guaranteedincome. Racial justice will be the driver.
The Old Fourth Ward Economic Security Task Force, co-chaired by @AmirforATL, @ATLShirley, @denajkimball, and @taifabutler, is releasing their report today calling for a #guaranteedincome for Atlanta. https://bit.ly/3qpMo1F
Hope Wollensack reminds us that we live in a country of abundance but the violence of poverty permeates our unequal country. This is an opportunity for us to reset and address injustices that have existed for far too long.
Thank you to LeJuano Varnell of @SweetAuburnWork. http://www.sweetauburnworks.com/ for the beautiful photograph of Atlanta.
#MLK
called for a #guaranteedincome 62 years ago to alleviate racial & economic injustice. The fierce urgency to answer this call & provide economic security to everyone persists. There is nothing new about poverty. Or the solution. Give people money. https://bit.ly/3qpMo1F

Recommendations from the O4W Task Force: 1. Create O4W Dividend Fund & give a #guaranteedincome to financially vulnerable residents so they are not displaced by gentrification;
2. Adopt a GA EITC or “Georgia Work Credit”; 3. Increase direct support at state & federal level; 4. Overturn state preemption on minimum wage; and 5. Invest in Black communities beyond cash transfers.
O4W resident Lynne reminds us that poverty is not a failure of character & wealth created by long-time residents should be shared by them. A #guaranteed income allows people to live with dignity, make choices w/ greater liberty, & have the freedom to build the life they want.
Now in this amazing line up is @itsprollypaul singing Lift Every Voice and Sing. Tune in here https://www.facebook.com/EconomicSecProj/videos/707375056587729
O4W resident Michelle works with mothers in her neighborhood and draws on her own mother's experience of doing everything right and still falling into poverty and despair. Because of illness they lost everything, including their home.
For her family, a #guaranteedincome would have provided the necessary support to keep her family in their home and to save them from financial trauma on top of a medical crisis. For the legacy of her mother and the legacy of #MLK
, Michelle asks us to do better for everyone.

. @MichaelDTubbs: We are here to reflect, commemorate, and rededicate ourselves to making #MLK
’s dream of realizing the basic dignity of all people through a #guaranteedincome. As Dr. King asked us in his last book, Where do we go from here: Chaos or Community?

#MLK
was convinced that direct cash payments to people would end poverty, and provide a baseline level of economic security and dignity for all. @MichaelDTubbs carried that vision forward with the @stocktondemo providing 2 years of #guaranteedincome to people.

What @MichaelDTubbs found in the @stocktondemo reinforced #MLK
’s vision and truth: we can trust people to make right decisions with money; dignity is not attached to work, it is attached to one’s humanity;

one does not have value because of what they produce, they have value because they are here, because they are human. Our policies & actions have to reflect that. We must become a beloved community, a community that acknowledges & sees the humanity of all people.
Dr. King’s legacy led to foundation of @mayorforagi to address the structural violence of poverty and lack of opportunity. 35 mayors around the county working to make real #MLK
’s dream of racial and economic justice.

. @AmirforATL is the District 2 Councilmember representing Atlanta’s Old 4th Ward: the neighborhood in which #MLK
was born and where Dr. King began to preach from the pulpit at the Ebenezer Baptist Church.

.@AmireforATL: It is harder and harder to make it in America no matter how hard you work, especially for Americans of color. The pandemic and economic crisis of the past year put more stress on families, pushing many from precarity to poverty. We need a #guaranteedincome now.
. @AmirforATL and the http://econsecurityatl.org task force is calling for a #guaranteedincome focused on Black women and Black mothers, asking #philanthropy to support while calling on federal leaders to build a federal guaranteed income for all.
. @AmirforATL: The time has come for government and public policy to be fearless and ambitious in pursuing decency and dignity. And for tackling racial disparities in economic insecurity head one. A #guaranteedincome provides the launching pad to live a decent, good life.
. @NikemaWilliams, Congresswoman for Georgia’s 5th District, reminds us remember #MLK
’s message of democracy, justice, hope, and love. Now is not the time to rest on our laurels. We must remain resolute in our efforts to ensure equality and economic empowerment for all people.

. @NikemaWilliams: Economic insecurity isn’t a new challenge or a partisan issue. It is unacceptable that working people can’t afford basic necessities. The pandemic has only highlighted the economic injustices prevalent in Black and brown communities.
. @NikemaWilliams: All jobs lost in Dec. 2020 were held by women, primarily Black and Latina workers, who are most likely to live in poverty. Rep. Williams once declined recommended medical care because she was concerned about cost and says no one should have to make that choice.
. @NikemaWilliams says #guaranteedincome is an essential support system because it (1) provides stability in fluctuating markets; (2) will directly provide for our caregivers who are not included in labor protections;
(3) will offset gender and racial disparities and how the pandemic has affected communities of color; and (4) give low income workers the needed benefits often absent from low wage jobs.
@AmirForATL and Rev. Vaughn live from @ebenezer_atl discussing the need for a #guaranteedincome now. Join us at https://www.facebook.com/EconomicSecProj/videos/707375056587729/
Rev. Vaughn reminds us of our interconnectedness. When one suffers, we all suffer. It is not a choice to be involved in policy or in justice. We have a responsibility to one another.
Rev Vaughn, executive pastor of @ebenezer_atl, is now in convo with @AmirForATL on "deservedness" and dignity -- and how a #GuaranteedIncome challenges the outdated ideas of who is deserving.
Rev. Vaughn and @AmirForATL discussing the choice in front of us: will we be a country where one job is enough? #GuaranteedIncome
. @dorianwarren's call to action: We are at an inflection point in our country. Now is the time for government to act for the people - and this time for all the people. There is much to be done & ensuring a #guaranteedincome to build economic & racial justice is necessary.
. @dorianwarren: Think of this moment as the beginning Reconstruction and The New Deal and where they meet together but for the 21st Century. There is a very long tradition in Black politics calling for a #guaranteedincome.
#MLK
called for a liveable income for every family bc there was no deficit in human resources, only a deficit in human will. @dorianwarren adds the deficit is also political will. Now is the time to demand that our government provide for our people with a #guaranteedincome.

. @dorianwarren gives us concrete actions to help build a fed #guaranteedincome to make true Dr. King’s vision to end poverty in the fierce urgency of now: 1. Have your mayor join @mayorsforagi; 2. Call on your city to provide cash to people excluded from stimulus checks;
3. Modernize & expand state EITC (see CA’s Golden State stimulus); 4.Urge #Biden Admin to pass ongoing cash payments through pandemic & economic recovery; 5. Embrace King’s call to abolish poverty through a #guaranteedincome based in racial justice. Join something and act.
