I really don't think stories really need conflict between everyone and I don't think characters always need to develop, and I'm really noticing that I don't want to watch movies or read when I'm tired because it seems like it's all twice as much conflict and challenge as needed
Like... I'm tired, and I'm really noticing when the author has gone out of their way to introduce conflict between protagonists who are already dealing with external trouble and it just doesn't seem all that meaningful to me when they could just get on and deal with stuff
Reminds me of a guy I know in college who insisted that stories where everything goes as wrong as possible and everyone is awful were true to life, and somehow higher quality than other stories. Seems silly
We had very frustrating movie nights that way. Anyway never mind him, I'm real tired trying to just read a book or watch a movie that's not leaning on cruelty. I mean fine, that's valid, but I need kindness in stories that's not punished just for effect, thanks
Fed up with characters who are kind and good just so it's more upsetting when they get destroyed... Yeah that's an important thing but come on, they don't ALL have to be replaced somehow by the personal growth of the protagonist
And I've written that storyline myself before and made sure to put conflict everywhere... And now I'm noticing how impressed I am when I find stories that show something else.
