Godzilla vs. Kong coming straight to HBO Max in March brings me back to a point I've been making - studios are going to bring back the mega tentpoles to get people in theaters again. Projects will need to be attractive enough to make it worth it for everyone.
This Spider-Man movie that's shaping up to be a Spiderverse bonanza project is the prototype for this. News of Chris Evans in talks to reprise Cap is also a sign. Would not be surprised to see another Avengers movie with Evans and RDJ. That type of movie gets asses in seats.
Not as crazy as you'd think. Nolan became big on a "one for you, one for me" type of contract, and Tenet didn't do really well and also isn't super well-loved. Studio might be in a good bargaining position to do something like that. https://twitter.com/StolteNick/status/1350511676655869956
That's just it - think of the most nerdgasm project you can and that's the kind of thing they'll need to restart the theater economy. Star Wars has plenty of options there including full reboots or alternate sequels.
Here's the thing, though - big actors and big directors also need the industry to recover for their own benefit. You might see more receptiveness to make projects like this as a sort of united industry effort. https://twitter.com/redsteeze/status/1350513264271085568
Think of it as like a five year long telethon where actors and directors just do whatever the most attractive fan projects are just so everything gets back to humming along and then they can go back to being too good to make those movies lol.
