people don't like the idea of servers, janitors, etc. making higher than a certain amount because then they wouldn't feel superior to them
ultimately, the promise to a portion of americans that while your life might suck, you can at least play lord over and/or feel superior to a naturalized underclass has always been central to disguising the obvious flaws of capitalism
This is also partially why the idea of "closing things down" here is untenable for so many people. How else will they spend the money they make and time they spend toiling if not by having someone else do it for them?
Those who manage to convince themselves that they work very hard by taking all day to make 4 pivot tables in excel must be able to "unwind" by playing boss and if their server made just as much as they did they couldn't convince themselves their job is that hard
The myth that the costs of things would go up with the minimum wage is absurd but continues to be pushed as common sense and fact because of how deeply profitable it is to keep the working class segregated
ultimately, it is demeaning to be forced to work in order to afford to live regardless of how much you make but whatever floats people's boats i guess
