I was just thinkin about red dyes & thought I’d share a story with y’all.
I worked in a group home for intellectually challenged adult males for over 15 yrs.
One kid (man) came to us at 18 yrs old and was still in high school. We were told he had a allergy to red dyes.

They said they made him aggressive.
If you don’t know, red dyes are in almost everything. The staff who did the grocery shopping had to be very careful. Meals were tricky because ideally everyone would have the same food but substitutions had to be made often.

We had to worry about him but we also had to respect the rights of other men in the home who wanted the foods that he couldn’t have.
Food was not allowed in bedrooms and all of the guys personal snacks and food with red dyes had to be kept in our office/med room for safety.

A little background, this kid is the sweetest human you can imagine. We had many nice moments but I remember one in particular when he was sitting on the couch, staring out the window. He looked back at me with the most beautiful, sincere smile I’ve ever seen & said

“It’s coming Ms. Mandy, it’s coming”. I thought he was talking about his school bus, which wasn’t due for an hour, & I said “it will be here but it’s still a bit early buddy”.
He smiled again & enthusiastically said “no Ms Mandy, it’s gonna be here really soon”.

I asked if he’d looked at his watch & he said “yes Ms Mandy and it’s almost time”.
He got up, took my hand, walked me to the window & as he was smiling from every inch of his body and soul said “here it comes Ms Mandy, the sun, the sun is finally here”.
My heart melted🥰

He was always very sweet to me.
Now, back to the point. One evening staff left the office door open. The kid went in, got a couple packs of someone else’s pop tarts & ate em.
Pop tarts have red dye.
Not too long after, he lost his shit, i mean LOST IT.

His game boy made him mad so he started tearing stuff up, staff came in to see what was wrong & he went after her, throwing hands and stuff. He went after other client so sheriff’s had to be called. They came & he attacked them, actually tearing one of the deputy’s bicep.

He was taken to the hospital, evaluated & sent home medicated & tired. For days after, he apologized to everyone & felt so bad.
It was staffs fault, that was acknowledged. The for should’ve been locked but we all make mistakes. This could’ve been a lot worse though.

He, we all, got lucky. Consuming that red dye turned a sweet kid into a sheriff assaulting maniac who could’ve easily been shot or imprisoned.
If your kid or a kid you know is overly aggressive, red dye is something you should look in to & possibly eliminate.
