Just took my daughter to the hospital because something’s not right. They said only 1 person can come in with her. I asked for my partner to join as an accommodation because I’m Disabled + the head nurse said “Well you can speak right? You can communicate? So you’re fine.”
She also said: “That just wouldn’t be fair to all of the people who want to be here, but can’t.” Classic Disability accommodation being seen as an advantage/perk.
I fully understand hospital restrictions because of COVID-19, and was not asking for “special” treatment. I was asking for equal treatment so my child could have the best possible care + support.
As long as we continue viewing Disability through such a narrow lens, our community members will continue facing this violence + harm from medical professionals. I’m tired.
