“If you can’t afford to pay 15 an hour you shouldn’t have a small business!” Amazon thinks so too. In fact, this mega corporation has been lobbying an increase for the federal minimum wage to be 15$ since 2018 in order to crush their smaller competitors. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wired.com/story/why-amazon-really-raised-minimum-wage/amp
Beautiful moment where zoomer economic illiteracy and virtue signaling helps Amazon corner the market, but you’ve got to hand it to Bezos for this one because it’s pretty fucking funny.
By the way, Amazon fully intends to automate these jobs in the near future, which can of course only be done with large scale production. So these higher paying jobs are only temporary, and small businesses which would resist automation because of economies of scale (1/2)
are being forced out of the market by labor costs only Amazon could absorb because once again, economies of scale. Amazon isn’t the only one either. So eventually, all of these working class jobs could disappear at a much faster rate than they would otherwise in a lot of sectors.
