I once had to fire an employee for stealing. The amount of the theft was not trivial but was relatively small as a % of receipts. The money she stole wasn’t the ultimate problem, it was the money she might continue to steal if allowed, and the burden of babysitting.
We have a huge number of people among us who are interested in overturning a legitimate election by force. The problem is less the insurrection they’ve tried already, though they should each get at least 5 yrs prison for it, and more the decades of future sedition.
I didn’t have the time and patience to rehabilitate a thieving employee, it wasn’t a good use of the business’ resources, so I chose not to. I don’t have that choice with my fellow citizens. If we can’t
fix
*them*, they can permanently break *us*.


The task begins with consequences and accountability: high levels of apprehension and prosecution combined with stiff prison terms. But it doesn’t end there. I’m not sure what the other part will entail except starting with our youth, showing them this is wrong and what is right.
That means we need basic civics education, a commitment to transparent, just, and consistent law enforcement, efficacy and efficiency in government programs and operations, … stuff like that. In short, good government, properly understood, well executed, and proudly displayed.
There’s lots of work to do and I hope, more than you can know, we’ll take it seriously now and achieve it.
