A video and a brief thread about how January 16, 2010 unfolded:
1/
Christopher was born Nov. 30, 2009, with multiple heart defects. When he was a week old, we were told the original plan—three surgeries—was no longer viable.

He needed a heart transplant.

The waiting began.

The phone rang at 1:20 a.m. PST. My wife was on the other end, calling from 2,000 miles away.

“We got the call," Shannon said. "We have a heart.”

That’s how the scariest, best day began.

I was already scheduled to fly from Oregon to Little Rock the next day. Instead I caught a 6 a.m. flight.

Six hours later, I walked into @archildrens – seven minutes ahead of the team bringing the heart.

The heart arrived, from another state, in an ordinary-looking blue cooler.
It's such a difficult thing--wanting something so badly but knowing what makes it possible.
We were thankful. And sad. Clashing emotions. #GoChristophergo #thebeatgoeson #DonateLife

Hopeful but anxious, we waited with family and friends, getting periodic updates from the OR.

Time passed very slowly.

At 3:44 p.m. the new heart was in place. The surgeon, Dr. Robert “Jake” Jaquiss, told us:

“That’s one of the happiest hearts I’ve seen in a while.”

Suddenly our hearts were very happy, too.

A pastor friend led us, praying: “We just say thank you, thank you. You are a good God.”

Then we got to see our boy. He was very sick—but that new heart was beat, beat, beating.

It was the scariest, best day.

We’re inexpressibly grateful to a family we have never met — we hope to one day — who, amid unfathomable tragedy, provided our baby boy with the gift of life.

On the 11th anniversary of a heart transplant, we thank God for the scariest, best day — and for so many since.

His answer to our prayers could've been different — He would still be good — but gratefully, the beat goes on.

Today, Christopher is a healthy, growing boy filled with life and a joyful, fighting spirit.

Eleven years later that little heart just keeps beating. It's still happy.

We are, too.

For 11 years, we have experienced a vivid illustration of this truth:

God gives every heartbeat — Christopher's ... ours ... and yours.

Which leads us to ask:

What will we do with them?
