Thing is, these people aren't dumb. While they'd never admit it, their behavior clearly indicates they know full well the criminal justice system is racist and will never come for them as harshly as it comes for Black and Brown folks.
Not only will they not be charged as harshly, everything they did will be given the benefit of the doubt, every "I just got swept up in the moment", and "I was just there to peacefully protest"...regardless of evidence to the contrary, will be accepted as true at sentencing.
To be clear, I'm not advocating for harsh criminal penalties for these people, I'm advocating for the equitable allocation of penalties for everyone in this country.
