So Amazon Prime released a new political drama and like any web-series, there is an abundance of Anti-Hindu and Anti-Incumbent propaganda, way more than i expect, had me smiling through the first episode by the sheer shamelessness. But anyway ill break it down scene by scene.
Alright this obviously contains spoilers and this thread will be about the first episode only. First things first, seeming amazing production value and screenplay in classic Amazon Prime fashion but the pacing and writing lack a punch. Rather predictable. Lets get into propaganda
1) The beginning scene of the show, shows us a huge crowd of farmers protesting against the government allowing a big corporation to set up a chemical factory on the land acquired from farmers for a "said/hypothetical" highway. Given the current scenario, predictable implication
The obvious portrayal of big corp, as evil makes it crystal clear that the creative team has a leftist stance. Usually all of entertainment industry is full of soft-lefties so no surprise there but moving forward, the sheer blunt propaganda even took me by surprise.
2) Same scene moves forward. We see a Muslim college student "Imran Zaidi" in the protest for getting his land back, along with his mother and two other friends. Who gets a call for college work and has to leave.
This is a great play at an emotional background story for our "innocent" Muslim student fighting for his rights, who from the first episode seems like our developing Umar Khalid. The inclusion of his mother was a very smart move for emotions. Credit where its due.
3) Scene progresses a little further and we see a political henchman, Gurpal Chauhan giving a list to the policemen overlooking the protest which had names of three "innocent" Muslims in the protest, who were to be killed for a very obvious, communal flareup for political gain.
The policemen hesitate as they had no prior order but the henchman goes on to explain the winning the election(based off exit polls, results expected a few days later by series timing) brings sins with it and the policeman gets orders to shoot from higher authority on a call.
This is followed by a fast moving scene of policemen cherry-picking, surrounding and shooting Muslim protestors, Ayub, Salim and Imran. Same three Muslims whose emotional connect the show built in the previous part of the scene. Imran had left due to a call from college though.
At this point i dont even have to explain. The classic portrayal of minority lives being treated as disposable by majority and building a sympathetic emotion towards this great injustice done to Muslims. The creatives appear to be drawing parallel from Delhi Riots.
This has all happened in the first 6 minutes of the show. I dont think i have ever seen so much blatant propaganda in any other web series in such a short time. I couldnt help but smile through this scene at how deeply does bollywood influence public brainwash.
4) The third scene bring us to a theater performance in VNU University (very convenient name) where Shiva Shekhar, (apparently Kanhaiya Kumar substitute) is playing the character for lord Shiva in the play and has a "social media tiff" with Ram ji due to follower count.Disgusting
Then he goes on to glorify the "azaadi" chant and "clarify" how they are patriots, and just want "azaadi" from corporate exploitation of labour, starvation, and all the usual but highly ironic communist propaganda.
Soft corner development for the "innocent, responsible youth" of the country in JNU. And how they arent really terrorists and its all a political ploy and they just want to do good for the country. Self explanatory enough and rather hilarious at how little they tried to hide.
5) Same scene continues ahead with our "beloved" Imran(from the protest, proxy Umar Khalid) being arrested from VNU college campus and being called terrorist by police without an actual warrant or order or permission from college authorities. Theatre erupts in agitated youth.
6) Next seen moves on to show Devkinandan, PM, treat a rather well mannered and sophisticated politician, Kailash Kumar with very harsh words seemingly for being from a Lower Caste. Devki nandan says that Kumar being an LC cannot give his opinion.
Devkinandan follows up with disrespecting his cobbler father and glorifies caste based atrocities saying the LC got reservation because of that and they should be glad. This comes after Devki gave his good for nothing son of his mistress, the defense department,in front of Kumar
This is an obvious hit on a Kashtriya mistreating a person belonging to a Lower Caste even though he seems polite, well mannered and competent. How the Upper Caste get favoured by nepotism and are free from sins even when they keep mistresses but Lower Castes will never be good.
Obvious hit at social strata and demonisation of Kshatriyas which has become a norm these days. Generalisation of all UCs as egotistic demons who hate the existence of Lowers Castes. Top tier Anti-Hindu propaganda and complete disregard for a rational outlook of ground reality.
7) Towards the end of the show, there are parallel scenes running, and one of which shows us our proxy Kanhaiya asking the inspector who arrested Imran to release him and talk to higher authorities and how Imran's arrest was unlawful and that they have 70 students waiting outside
In the heated exchange, Shiva Shekhar threatens the cop with court action and the inspector, red with anger calls 3 SUVs full of policemen and starts a lathi charge on the protesting students to flex his power on them.
Classic leftists propaganda where JNU students are always innocent and the police is always corrupt oppressors conducting unlawful acts. Another parallel to soften the public view of JNU students in their scuffles with the police during the CAA riots and so forth.
The first episode had a runtime of roughly 35 mins. And they managed to pack this much propaganda into it. By the end, it was so obvious and predictable that it got borderline boring. Either way ive only watched the first episode. Lets see what the future ones bring to the table
