‘We shouldn’t be against capitalism, only crony capitalism.’ This is the dullest right-wing argument, made by people who see our economic system as fundamentally good but corrupted – ignoring the mountain of evidence that it is a machine for inequality and exploitation. https://twitter.com/labourlist/status/1350434784028336129
This generation of the centre-left, unlike previous ones in periods of crisis, is determined to learn nothing about how the system works, take no action to constrain its barbarism and implement no policies which might prevent its glaring injustices. Not going to end well.
May 2019: “If social democracy was a product of the upward march of labour, and is existentially threatened by its decline, shouldn’t social democrats today renew the struggle against capital that brought about the welfare state in the first place?” https://tribunemag.co.uk/2019/05/a-challenge-to-labours-moderates
The reality, unfortunately, is that very few of Labour’s ‘moderates’ are social democrats. They are social liberals, whose ambition is a slightly fairer redistribution of the surplus from a market economy. By technocrats – not worker power or public ownership.
