If I’m sarcastic, it’s only because I was always more pessimistic about Abiy’s tenure than many in Washington, less due to any of his personal failings than the fact that it seemed the issues were too big for any single reformer

The hope that Western officials (to say nothing of Ethiopians at home and in the diaspora) put in Abiy spoke to a genuine desire to see Ethiopia transcend a violent, authoritarian past
