The truth is, interns should be paid fairly, your “intern salary” should be able to afford you, accommodation, food & transport so that you will be able to effectively do your work. This notion that people “should be happy that they are at least employed” should stop honestly
It make no sense that you get paid R6K bt your cost of doing that job is R10K, where must you get the additional R4000? Most ppl don’t have the luxury to stay at home during that internships since most of them are far. Let’s not say “Mina I use to get ....” it’s not important
Jst cause you were underpaid & exploited, it doesn’t mean every1 should be. We shouldn’t try to justify cheap labor by saying “you need to first get experience” for you to paid fairly. We need to all make it clearly that it’s wrong to be underpaid & exploited instead of defending
My first intention position was in a different province & I was paid R6000, lucky we had free accommodation, transport, food provided by the company. Imagine if all those were not provided and someone tells me “at least you getting experience & should be lucky”, bro I need to eat
This intern conversation reminds me of supervisors who don’t give their students enough funding and tell them “remember you here to study so you should be grateful of whatever you receive”, true you here to study but students still need food and to cloth themselves.
