I've had a lot of questions on this, so here are my top tips!

I'm still learning myself, so if you have anything to add please share below. This is centred around ACE project grants but I'd love to hear tips on securing funding from other bodies, particularly for film.

1. Read ACE's Let's Create Strategy. It'll give you an idea of what they're interested in funding -  https://www.artscouncil.org.uk/letscreate .

2. Keep answers clear and concise. Use their wording. Make it easy for them.
3. ACE want to know that you're reliable. Your timeline and budget will say a lot about your project management. Ensure they're realistic and not overambitious. And have a contingency! This is also for your sanity.
You also want to ensure you're not asking for money for any work that has taken place before the grant has been awarded. (This is hella annoying as so much time goes into conceiving, shaping and planning the project, plus pulling the application together.)
4. Demonstrate certainty. If you can write the team as confirmed on your application, great. It'll also strengthen your application if you can include a partner. Can u ask another organisation/individual to support with an aspect of your project, or serve as a project consultant?
5. Arts Council can fund up to 90% of the cost of an activity. I believe this may currently be waived due to COVID, but otherwise figure out where you're gonna get that other 10% from.  @UprootProd received a generous seed commission from  @CamdenPT for This Is Black.
This 10% can also be in-kind support!! For instance if you've been offered free space or marketing support, cost up the value of it and include it.
6. Pay someone to write your application!!! It's a real skill. Arts Council can pay a support worker to do it if you’re disabled and/or have a physical or mental health condition.
The magnificent @daisthehale wrote the app for This Is Black and fab @alistairwilks wrote the Connect app. If you're someone who writes applications, make yourself known below!
I hope this is helpful! It's so liberating when you crack it and deep that you can really create anything you want.
A rep from ACE is leading a session on project grants for Uproot Connect. As this is clearly a real area of interest I'll look into how we can share that info more widely. Watch this space - sign up to our mailing list at http://UprootProd.co.uk  & follow @UprootProd for updates.
