The London Underground (Tube) consumes more electricity in a year than the entire nation of Benin with a population of 12 million. One of the many reasons I find this article https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-55620848 based on a paper by colleagues at @UniofOxford extremely troubling.
1/4
The paper calls for a “rapid decarbonization shock… leading to large-scale cancellation of fossil fuel plants currently in the pipeline”. This line of thinking will deny hundreds of millions of Africans the essentials for a decent living.
2/4
African countries are fully committed to a clean energy transition through their NDC plans and this will require a mix of renewable and non-renewable sources initially.
3/4
The paper is yelling at a hungry and malnourished person, "Hey, you seriously need to watch your calorie intake! And is that a packet of muffins in your hands? Throw that away!"
