So I drove to 5 vaccination sites in LA today to see what's going on. Spent so far 30ish hours researching & talking to friends in healthcare & those who have "access" . I'll share a few tips & crazy things I saw. also AMA
tip 1. Find your states/county health .gov site that lists distribution like this. https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/COVID-19/VaccineDoses.aspxYou
sadly we've only administered 950K of 3M doses in CA .. just pathetic. But notice the hospital networks that have the doses? call them!
multiple people I know have scheduled @SutterHealth & @ucsf Each states vaccine site you could start here but it's not great https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/index.html but you should google "state covid-19 vaccine doses shipped .gov" to find yours
from there each county has their own rules if they are doing 1a healthcare or 1b 65+ but find out where 1a can get vaccinated http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/acd/ncorona2019/vaccine/hcwsignup/ and drive by (don't call they aren't picking up) to see if they are doing giving extra end of day doses
most places do it at 5pm, lines formed at 3. 1 place had 100 people in line, another 5. ask security guard your odds as they've been there everyday. one said about 5 or so a day. Another location was very very loose, no actual documentation required
she gave a very suggestive, "just fill out and say you are a healthcare worker". I obviously didn't do it. but I watched and saw no checking of credentials for a few folks before I left. They just wanted to get shots in arms.
At all the locations though the number of people actually getting shots was very low, I could see empty chairs, hearing people's appointment times as they said it. And what I suspect is happening is people are making reservations at multiple places to hedge.
It's like opentable with no consequences to booking multiple vaccine slots to make sure you get one. If anyone works a site, would love to know % of no shows. I think it's going to be 25-30%. I think this is where much of the leakage is as well.
notice on the LA county site, Vons, ralphs, safeway etc are listed but no booking? I think this from @dougjoe https://twitter.com/dougjoe/status/1349892493907685379?s=20 is the same. Crazy!! You can schedule a vaccine at Kroger's but site hasn't worked 3 nights for me https://www.kroger.com/rx/guest/get-vaccinated
i know of several who've gotten lucky and were able to book. for Orange county which is 65+ and doing disneyland http://www.othena.com  but that site also buckled yesterday and when logging in after signing up you just get this unhelpful message.
Then each county has different rules and some cities aren't part of counties. LA County isn't doing 65+ yet (so dumb) but long beach is, as is Orange County and San Deigo county. So check each county but check your cities that are unincorporated
I know this was some rambling but I can tell you CA states site is just horrific as is LA county. They then send you to http://www.vaccinefinder.com  but that site doesn't list Covid! it's truly a mess. Ask Me Anything!
this just launched for LA! https://twitter.com/erenbali/status/1350275719620825089?s=20
Few more stories. Another friend knows a few doctors who have smaller clinics just giving shots to their friends. Others who have access to hospital administrators. I called 1 place who said only employees & families of employees.
I know the "families" part is no paperwork required. "this is my in law, this is my cousin who lives with me, this is my brother in law, etc.. etc. ". what's frustrating is it should be 65+ just show an ID on site.
Even better. Birthday on Jan-March older than 65 Dodger Stadium. April to June disneyland, etc. 65+ and a fastpass lane for 85+ & frontline workers.
1 more story. Have been told by some they've been calling Texas clinics/hospitals that have extra doses, & literally flying there to get the vaccine. this happened last week. People are going out of state to get their vaccine!
also, interesting, the form I was given that I didn't fill out and gave back asked for insurance card or check "no insurance". you'd still get the shot. I'd imagine out of laziness everyone would just click no insurance so gov't gonna pay.
I know I keep adding to the thread but I have ADHD :) . one more thing. I focused on the smaller locations, not run by dept of health or local fire dept. clinics, community centers. All were in very low income neighborhoods.
I was using desktop for @CuraPatient http://www.othena.com  for orange county. No luck so midnight via mobile I get this.. I'm on android. 1k downloads .. you had 1 job... Is it like this in every city & state? They should have used @CarbonHealth
pretty much this everywhere inside, with lines outside for those who "dont have an appt" https://twitter.com/clintmania/status/1349856027009716229?s=20
Sorry about the bad link to one of the most important pages! https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/COVID-19/VaccineDoses.aspx this took me forever to find. It list the major hospital networks that have the vaccine.
wow.. just read thru Pfizer cold chain. 30 days after a facility receives, they have to move to fridge for max 5 days, then once mixed 6hrs! So 35 days or we throw it away!
Moderna at least is 6 months in a freezer, 30 days in a fridge, and 12hrs once out of the fridge & doesn't have any diluting steps. So if you are looking for extra shots, leftovers I'd find places that are giving Pfizer. higher chance waste
so @albertsons has a site you can signup for to get notified when they will have appointments available https://www.albertsons.com/my-vaccine-communication.html you can preview what locations will be doing for public by going here https://mhealthcheckin.com/covidvaccine#covid_vaccination_tab as they do tier 1
Never saw this! @HHSGov back in November announced all these grocery stores and pharmacies. So check the ones in your states! Looks like all the major ones! They should already be administering healthworkers & soon 65+? https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/2020/11/12/trump-administration-partners-chain-independent-community-pharmacies-increase-access-future-covid-19-vaccines.html
So you can see up to date numbers (not sure how many days data lag is) but CA has 2.4M doses sitting around. Does everyone remember Brewster's million? @GavinNewsom should watch it. https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#vaccinations
Here's crowdsourced what places might have extra shots!. Ht @hunterwalk https://twitter.com/patio11/status/1350343304127283201?s=19
For you NY https://twitter.com/ronlieber/status/1350515419883446274?s=19
i'm hearing 8pm PST for Disneyland is when new appointments get added. http://www.othena.com  ymmv but if you get presented time slots don't pick the ones at the top! that's what everyone else is doing pick later. iphone>web>android
