An MBA degree is quite common among strategists, even though it is not a necessity. However, that could certainly help you becoming a brand strategist.

Among junior strategists at least five years of relevant experience is the norm.
Usually, senior strategists have at least 15 years of experience. Most of them specialize in a particular field such as B2B, CPG, luxury, place etc.

If you want to be a brand strategist, get better at pattern recognition. Learn both strategy and design. If you enjoy reading a lot, this is a good position for you. If not, you may want to pursue different avenues.
In case you are a student, you might consider applying for a product manager or consumer insight manager position at a B2B or B2C company first.
